Jesus Weeping

Pastor Marty Toepke-Floyd

This exploration of John 11 takes us beyond the familiar story of Lazarus to discover why Jesus wept at his friend's tomb. We often assume Jesus cried simply because Lazarus died, but the truth runs much deeper. Jesus knew Lazarus would rise again, yet he still wept. Why? Because Jesus weeps with us in our pain, even when he knows the outcome. He feels our grief, our confusion, our loss. But there's another layer: Jesus wept for himself, knowing that raising Lazarus would seal his own fate. By performing this miracle, Jesus chose the path to the cross. He could have played it safe, remained a respected teacher, and lived a long life. Instead, he confronted death head-on, both Lazarus's and his own. This passage reveals that our salvation came at tremendous personal cost to Jesus. He wept knowing what obedience to God's will would require: his own suffering and death. The tears Jesus shed outside Lazarus's tomb were tears of love so profound that he willingly walked toward his own crucifixion so that we might have eternal life. When we grieve, we don't grieve alone. Jesus weeps with us and for us, and his tears ultimately become our salvation.
