Who Has Your Back?

“The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen” (2 Timothy 4:18).

That verse comes from the Apostle Paul, who was writing his mentee Timothy. Paul was in a Roman prison—and facing his own death.

By this point, Paul had faced many obstacles, in his calling to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. Yet—despite those obstacles, and pending death—Paul had assurance that God would bring him safely into God’s heavenly kingdom. I can relate.

Like most, I too have had my fair share of obstacles in my life. Some I had a hand in creating, and some I did not. Yet—upon a quick review of my life thus far—I’ve been incredibly blessed.

Despite many hardships, when I put them on a scale (both those deserved and those hardships of an imperfect world), they are not nearly as much as the side of the scale that holds my blessings. I am fortunate in that I can say that, throughout my life, it has always felt as though God has had my back.

That may not be the case for you. You may feel like you’ve been left out of the blessings possible in this life. I can understand that feeling as well, but let’s look again at the latter part of that verse from Apostle Paul which says that “the Lord will…bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom.” Why? How can Paul have such assurance? … In a word—Jesus.

Paul knew that believers in Jesus as the Son of God are assured of a future eternity spent in God’s heavenly kingdom. That truly is Good News.

Whether or not you feel like you’ve been rescued from every evil deed thus far, through your belief in Jesus, you can look forward to being brought safely into God’s heavenly kingdom.
